"Colorblock Canyon" - Fashion Design Project
Project type
Design Project
Date
December 2025
This project was the final deliverable for my "Understanding Fashion Design" course, where I was tasked with designing a collection from start to finish, considering all of the elements from conceptualization and mood boarding to color story, fabric usage, sketching, marketing, and manufacturing. The thematic aspect of my collection first emerged from a dream I had about designing a color-blocked patchwork slip dress for a high-society American woman in the 1950s who lounges poolside at her mid-century Palm Springs home. Since I had recently watched the 2022 film “Don’t Worry Darling,” the plotline took place in an upper-class desert suburbia where each look was composed of bold primary colors arranged in geometric grids, much like the discipline of Piet Mondrian's artwork. From there, I realized I wanted my collection to expand on the intersection of these references by creating luxury resortwear that balances romanticized old-Hollywood glamour with modern silhouettes for the 21st-century vacationer. At its core, the main message of my collection is that luxury resort wear shouldn't be limited to a destination but rather should reflect a feeling of ease, confidence, and freedom wherever the wearer goes. This idea also informs my design ethos, which prioritizes sustainability and redefines luxury through longevity. In making each garment versatile enough for the modern traveler, I want each look to feel like it can be styled from beach to desert to city, reflecting a tastefully cinematic jet-setter lifestyle.
